To place a pen in the hands of a photographer rarely leads to anything memorable. So that said; by way of a brief resume' my interests are of the natural world where found and of the landscapes which man has shaped. In particular that within Scotland. My photography generally sets out to document rather than impose some pictorialist ideal. Recording that which has struck me as interesting, beautiful or shocking and that I would like to show to others.
Photographs can and should be made anywhere and at anytime no matter the weather or 'quality' of light. A challenge at times perhaps but photography is easy enough. Since becoming a professional in 1995 following a period as photographer with British Geological Survey, co creator of a Photography Gallery (The Arbor, Derby) and an exhibitions officer, I balance both commercial 'stock' photography and my own Personal projects. Style is not something I seek but endevour to stay true to what I do well, embracing the world with eyes and mind wide open.
Photographers who's work I admire and who continue to inspire include: Robert Adams, John Gossage, Joel Sternfeld, J H Lartigue, Stephen Shore, Eugene Atget, Nicholas Nixon and not forgetting friend and my former tutor (Derby 86-89,BA(Hons) Photographic Studies) John Blakemore. Of course there are many many others and I've not touched upon the many painters and filmakers that I admire.
The world is a beautiful and magical place and I hope my work records and expresses just a fraction so others might see.
